Job Description - Grinder (Mechanical / Piping Works)

Reporting To: Piping Supervisor / Welding Foreman / Mechanical Supervisor

Job Location: Project Site - Fuel Distribution System (Fuel Terminal / Tank Farm / Airport Fuel Hydrant System)

Job Summary:

The Grinder is responsible for performing grinding, surface preparation, weld cleaning, and finishing work on piping and mechanical components used in fuel distribution systems within an EPC construction project. The role supports pipe fitters and welders by preparing pipe joints, cleaning welds, and ensuring surfaces are ready for welding, inspection, and coating while maintaining strict safety standards in fuel handling environments.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Grinding and Surface Preparation

- Perform grinding of pipe edges, weld joints, and metal surfaces using grinding machines.

- Prepare pipe bevels and edges for welding operations.

- Smooth rough surfaces and remove burrs, sharp edges, and irregularities.

2. Weld Cleaning and Finishing

- Clean weld joints by removing:

- Slag

- Spatter

- Excess weld metal

- Prepare welded joints for inspection, NDT testing, or coating application.

3. Joint Preparation Support:

- Assist welders and pipe fitters in preparing pipe joints before welding.

- Ensure proper edge finishing and root preparation.

- Maintain correct surface condition for welding quality.

4. Tool Operation :

- Operate and maintain tools such as:

- Angle grinding machines

- Bench grinders

- Cutting discs and grinding discs

- Wire brushes and polishing tools

- Ensure tools are properly maintained and safe to operate.

5. Material Handling Support:

- Assist in handling pipes, fittings, and fabricated components.

- Support pipe fitters and welders during fabrication and installation activities.

6. Quality Compliance:

- Ensure surfaces are properly prepared as per project quality requirements.

- Follow instructions from supervisors, welders, and QA/QC inspectors.

- Maintain accurate grinding and finishing standards.

7. Safety Compliance:

- Follow site safety rules and HSE procedures, especially for work in fuel distribution facilities.

- Use proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as:

- Safety helmet

- Safety goggles / face shield

- Gloves

- Ear protection

- Safety shoes

- Ensure safe handling of grinding tools and equipment.

Required Skills :

- Experience operating angle grinders and metal finishing tools

- Knowledge of weld preparation and cleaning techniques

- Ability to support pipe fitting and welding activities

- Understanding of basic construction safety practices

Tools & Equipment Knowledge:

- Angle grinder

- Bench grinder

- Grinding discs

- Cutting wheels

- Wire brush attachments

- Polishing tools

Qualification:

- ITI / Technical Training Certificate (Mechanical / Fitter / Welder preferred)

- Basic training in mechanical or fabrication work

Experience

- 2- 4 years experience in grinding and metal finishing work in construction or fabrication projects

- Experience in oil & gas, refinery, piping, or fuel distribution EPC projects preferred

Physical Requirements:

- Ability to work in outdoor construction environments

- Capable of handling continuous grinding operations

- Ability to work at heights and confined spaces when required
