Head - Propulsion Systems - Shipbuilding - Production Site (12-18 yrs)

Role Summary

Lead the planning, installation, alignment, testing, and commissioning of the ship's entire propulsion train, including main engines, gearboxes, shafting, propellers, and steering gear. Ensure precise mechanical installation in compliance with International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) and Classification Society standards. Manage integration with hull and auxiliary systems at the Ship Construction Site (SCS) production yard.

Core Responsibilities :

- Develop detailed installation plans and allocate work to teams to meet project timelines and targets.

- Supervise critical machinery installation, including optical and laser shaft alignment, stern tube boring, rudder boring, and resin chocking of engines and diesel generators.

- Oversee connection and testing of auxiliary systems vital to propulsion such as fuel, lubrication, cooling, hydraulics, and control systems.

- Ensure all installations and welding strictly follow Class Society quality assurance plans and coordinate third-party inspections.

- Lead pre-commissioning checks, Basin Trials, and provide expert support during final Sea Trials until vessel acceptance.

- Manage complete documentation for propulsion installation, testing, certifications, and regulatory compliance.

- Coordinate with classification surveyors, quality teams, project documentation, and OEMs for approvals and certification.

- Monitor installation progress using ERP systems and enforce Quality, Health, Safety, and Environment (QHSE) standards.

- Mentor and guide engineering and documentation teams for effective reporting and compliance.

Required Experience & Qualifications :

- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Marine Engineering, or Naval Architecture.

- 12 to 18 years in shipbuilding or ship repair, including 6-8 years in senior management roles directly handling high-precision machinery installation and trials.

- Expert knowledge of large marine engine installation, optical/laser alignment, stern tube and rudder boring, and resin chocking.

- Strong understanding of IACS class rules, shipyard production planning, and quality assurance requirements.

- Experience coordinating with OEMs and managing third-party inspections and certifications.

- Refit and repair experience is a plus.

- Proficient in ERP systems such as SAP for project tracking and documentation management.
