Job Title : Instrument Technician - Solar Power Project

Department : Projects / O&M / Renewable Energy

Reports To : Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) Engineer / O&M Manager / Site Manager

Job Summary:

The Instrument Technician - Solar Projects is responsible for installation, calibration, testing, commissioning, and maintenance of instrumentation and monitoring systems in solar power plants. This includes weather monitoring systems, SCADA components, sensors, metering systems, and communication networks to ensure accurate plant performance monitoring and grid compliance.

Key Responsibilities

1. Installation & Commissioning

- Install and wire field instruments such as irradiance sensors (pyranometers), temperature sensors (module & ambient), wind speed/direction sensors, and rain gauges.

- Install and configure data loggers, Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), and energy meters.

- Assist in SCADA system installation and communication setup (RS-485, Modbus, Ethernet, fiber optics).

- Perform loop checking and signal testing.

- Ensure proper routing and termination of instrumentation cables.

2. Calibration & Testing

- Calibrate sensors and instruments as per manufacturer recommendations.

- Conduct functional testing of SCADA and monitoring systems.

- Verify accuracy of energy meters and protection relays.

- Perform periodic inspection and preventive maintenance.

3. Troubleshooting & Maintenance

- Diagnose faults in instrumentation and communication systems.

- Replace defective sensors, transmitters, and communication devices.

- Rectify data discrepancies in monitoring systems.

- Support inverter and grid monitoring integration.

4. Documentation & Compliance

- Maintain calibration records and test reports.

- Prepare daily/weekly maintenance logs.

- Ensure compliance with project specifications and safety standards.

- Support audits and client inspections.

Required Qualifications

- ITI / Diploma in Instrumentation, Electrical, or Electronics Engineering.

- 2- 5 years of experience in instrumentation or solar power projects.

- Experience in utility-scale solar plant instrumentation preferred.

Technical Skills

- Knowledge of solar plant monitoring systems and weather stations.

- Familiarity with SCADA systems and industrial communication protocols (Modbus, TCP/IP, RS-485).

- Experience with energy meters, protection relays, and data loggers.

- Proficiency in using calibration tools and testing instruments (multimeter, calibrator, loop tester).

- Understanding of control panels and signal wiring (analog & digital I/O).

Soft Skills:

- Strong analytical and troubleshooting ability.

- Attention to detail and accuracy.

- Ability to work independently and in team environments.

- Good communication and reporting skills.

Working Conditions:

- Site-based role (outdoor solar plant environment).

- May require working at heights or in high-temperature conditions.

- Travel to remote solar project sites may be required.

Physical Requirements:

- Ability to lift instruments and work with hand tools.

- Capability to stand, bend, and climb ladders.

- Physically fit for industrial site conditions.

- Accuracy and reliability of plant monitoring data.

- Minimal instrumentation downtime.

- Timely calibration and maintenance completion.

- Compliance with safety and quality standards.
